Xenics part of FP7 Sunny project on European border monitoring

A new European Research Project, co-funded by the European Commission has been launched to enhance the effectiveness of border surveillance activities at the southern external borders of the Union. The Smart UNattended airborne sensor Network for detection of vessels used for cross border crime and irregular entrY (SUNNY) project will run for 42 months contributing towards achieving the objectives of the European Border Surveillance System (EUROSUR). The SUNNY project will develop affordable and interoperable technical capabilities, in particular for detecting and tracking small vessels used by migrants and drug smugglers.

The project goal for Xenics is the development and demonstration of small multi-band modules for integration in UAVs and small fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Xenics will focus on the development of infrared SWIR and uncooled LWIR sensors of small size, low weight, low cost, and high resolution, which can operate under variable atmospheric conditions such as darkness, snow, fog and rain.

The development of new small and light weight IR sensors, with onboard image processing capabilities is the main challenge for Xenics in this project. These developments are an important step for the use of IR sensors on UAVs and for surveillance applications in general.
